ARC 2018 Sailing Race - Canaries to St Lucia

Having enjoyed competing in 9 hugely successful ARCs since 2003 we are planning to take part once again on November 2018.

For the last 25 years Windward Sailing has successfully competed in numerous offshore races including the famous Fastnet race, the Three Peaks Challenge, Round Britain & Ireland and of course the ARC itself.

Over the years we have won plenty of trophies - and all of this has been achieved with individual sailors on board, many with little or no experience of competitive sailing. We always provide a core of passionate and professional crew who know the yacht inside out and therefore can spend their time teaching, showing and encouraging crew members how to get the best from the boat and to shape the crew into a winning team. However, despite an emphasis on racing, finishing first comes second to having a fun, safe and memorable Atlantic crossing.

The course has remained the same for many years and follows the same trade winds that Christopher Columbus sailed by many centuries ago. Fortunately today the yachts are considerably better equipped with modern navigation and weather equipment to make the crossing as efficient, safe and enjoyable as possible.

Heading south from Gran Canaria to ride the trade winds west towards the Caribbean means the ARC is a predominantly downwind race  and with her design and full compliment of sails there should be no problems with making the most of the wind- We'll be on the beach in St. Lucia in just 13-16 days!

The Yacht

The Yacht

The Yacht is a racer/cruiser built for ocean racing and boasts a full up-to-date sailing inventory including both asymmetric and symmetric spinnakers. She has already completed three ARCs as well as several Fastnet Races. She has a comfortable and functional interior plenty of space. Despite including a fridge and water maker she remains quick. Maintained to the highest standard, she is the ideal yacht for those who wish to cross the Atlantic competitively yet comfortably.

The Crew

The yacht will come with skipper and mate who will have extensive knowledge of the boat and all aspects of offshore yacht racing and tactics. The team will be then be made up of people such as you who are enthusiastic about sailing, racing, and winning. Full training comes with the package and our aim at the end of the campaign is that any one of the crew members will have the ability and confidence to step onto any boat and become a key member of any team.

The Race

The Race

The ARC race itself starts on November 25th 2018 from Las Palmas in Gran Canaria and finishes 2700 miles later in Rodney Bay, St Lucia. The race as always is organised by the World Cruising Club.

The start line of the ARC is just offshore of Las Palmas and is a great spectacle with hundreds of spectator craft and a Spanish warship at anchor as the start vessel. It is certainly an emotional moment for all those crew involved as all of the hard work in preparation in the build up to this big day comes to fruition. There will be much jockeying for position in the first few hours as we all race down the eastern side of Gran Canaria, but in a very short space of time most of the fleet will be left behind us! Once clear of the Canary Islands the skill of the Navigator will be tested as we try and set the best course that will pick up the stronger north easterly trade winds.

A day or so out we will truly be running down the rhumb line at over 10 knots making good 200+ miles a day. As we progress the weather will be getting warmer and warmer and - if past races are anything to go by - we will be sailing in shorts by day and night. The daily routine of sailing this yacht at its optimum will also include the morning ritual of removing the stranded flying fish from all parts of the deck!

All too soon the race will be over and the magical sight of the Caribbean island of St Lucia will materialise over the hortizon. At the finish in Rodney Bay we will be welcomed with rum punch as we cross the line will set the scene for days of partying as our fellow competitors catch up with us over the finish line!

The Training Weekend

Training Weekend (Date to be confirmed)

The training weekend will be based in the Solent. The weekend will be used to familiarise the crew with the yacht, provisionally allocate crew positions and as a fun weekend to get to know each other. Everyone will get a chance to try all aspects of sailing the yacht and to find out whether offshore racing is for them.

We will need each member of the crew to be fully conversant with all aspects of the yacht and her gear. For instance, everybody will need to be competent on hoisting and trimming any one of the sails. The training weekend will be physically demanding and a reasonable level of fitness will be required, but there is no need to be nervous. There will be plenty of crew on hand to guide you through the weekend and answer any and all of your questions.

The Delivery

The Delivery

The ARC Race starts in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. We will set off from Cowes earlyOctober (date tbc) ready to begin the race and we invite you to join us on this delivery. This passage should take around 10-12 days and is an ideal time to build upon what you learnt during the training weekend earlier in the year. Whilst the training weekend will familiarise you with the basics of sailing our yacht, the delivery will allow you to really get to know how the boat works for long periods without the pressure of racing. Time can be spent fine-tuning the yacht and equipment so that she may be in the best possible condition for the transatlantic adventure to follow.

If time allows, one or two stops will be made in the Spanish or Portuguese ports along the Coast before heading out from Lisbon on the 800 mile offshore leg to Las Palmas.
